BP Sophomore Experience
May 2018
May 2018
The week-long program exposed me to commodity trading, trading analytics, and risk management in the oil and gas industry through case studies and simulations. Each day was comprised of talks by a senior leadership, actives, and learning sessions led by experienced professionals. During my time there, I was taught a lot about the oil and gas industry, learning everything form offshore exploration and drilling to downstream refining and marketing, along with everything in between.
The focus of Sophomore Experience was learning about BP's IST division and how they trade oil, gas, and other physical commodities. Not only was I able to learn the fundamentals of stock and commodity trading, but I was also given the chance to put my learning into action by using a simulated program to trade natural gas and energy. Over the course of the week, as I grew in my knowledge and confidence, I began to get better at analyzing trends and execute better trades. Sophomore Experience helped me collaborate better with my peers through project risk management case studies and presentations on them. Not only was I able to network and grow alongside some of the smartest students across the United States, I also made life long friends.
BP Sophomore Experience is a unique opportunity for students to learn more about commodity trading, risk management and market analysis for the oil and gas industry. The program is designed to expose sophomore students to the field of oil and gas supply and trading within BP's Integrated Supply and Trading (IST) division, teaching them the fundamentals of oil and gas markets, what commodity trading is and how it is done, and the marketing of downstream products to customers and consumers.
